CHIROPRACTIC CARE
The Foundation of a
Healthy Business
By Dr. Adrianne Hauff D.C.
The owner of a business is the leader of its
corporate culture. Employees will adopt
the habits of the boss and if they see that
the boss is working through the flu, they
will also work through the flu. While this
may feel like dedication and commitment
to your job or business, you are doing
your business a disservice in the long
run. Instead of one employee being out
for a couple of days, you end up having
multiple employees out for many days as
that cold or flu spreads throughout the
office. These types of illnesses are usually
short lived and will run their course.
However, people with physical injuries,
such as back pain or knee pain, will
ignore or “power through” the pain
in order to go to work. The time lost
and reduction in efficiency can last
for months and even years. Without
treatment, these conditions can lead to
permanent disability. These injuries can
be treated quickly and effectively without
medications or surgery when addressed
early. Working through injuries can lead
to long term complications that are not
so easily treated. Arthritis, degenerative
joint disease, chronic pain, chronic
inflammation or the need for prescription
medications and surgery can occur.
Prescription medication for these
types of injuries are generally opioid

based pain relievers such as Vicodin,
Oxycotin, hydrocodone or any number
of other medications. Along with these
drugs, a muscle relaxer will likely
be prescribed as well. These include
medications such as cyclobenzaprines
(Flexeril, Tabradol or Amrix to name
a few) and Carasopridol (Soma)
which leads to drowsiness, difficulty
concentrating, generalized muscle
weakness and slowed reflexes. No one
can effectively perform their job duties
while relying on drugs such as these.
While the short term relief achieved from
these drugs allows us to get through
the day, the underlying pathology still
persists. The problem has been covered
up but not fixed. Long term bone and
joint damage will occur and when
coupled with opioid pain management,
you are left with a recipe for disaster
and addiction.
There are many non-invasive and
medication free ways to manage muscu-
loskeletal pain. Chiropractic care is
proven to be effective and a safe way to
control or eliminate back, neck, joint pain,
headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome and
arthritis to name a few. Harvard Medical
School has released research that states
chiropractic manipulative therapy is
effective at treating these conditions
( w w w. h ea l t h . h a r v a rd . e d u / p a i n /

Chiropractic manipulation is a term used
to describe the specific application of
a gentle, low force thrust into a joint in
order to increase joint mobility, reduce
interference with the nerves of that joint
and return the normal range of motion
to that region. The popping noise
often associated with a chiropractic
adjustment is caused by the release of
gas bubbles that are normally dissolved
in the synovial fluid of the joint. This fluid
acts as a lubricant to reduce friction and
allows the free and smooth movement of
joints. In addition to adjustments, other
therapies performed by a chiropractor
include postural and exercise education,
nutritional counseling, ergonomic train-
ing, electrical stimulation, cold laser
therapy, manual therapies and the app-
lication of heat or ice.
The American Medical Association has
recommended chiropractic care as the
first line of defense for spinal pain and they
recommend it as the preferred treatment
before surgery or medication (https://

manipulation-for-acute-low-back-pain/).
Chiropractic care is recognized as a safe
and effective way to treat pain; however,
there is a plethora of misinformation out
there that would say otherwise. Rely on
evidence based research from trusted
sources such as the AMA, National
Institutes of Health, accredited medical
schools and peer-reviewed case studies
to learn the true value of chiropractic care.

W
hen we think about a
healthy business, we often
think about bottom lines,
profit & loss or revenue
streams. We don’t always think that the
health of a business is directly related
to the health of its people. Profits are
lost when you are not working. Revenue
streams slow down when no one is
there to sell. It is all too common for
entrepreneurs to put the health of their
business before their own health.
