way to prove that we offer variety due to gender, race, and sex but there’ s nothing behind it. An emptiness and hollow nature extend its arms around many offices that champion diversity but fail it as a praxis.
Singh is determined to make diversity an action verb instead of a vacant noun. In addition to attempting to correct inequities of the past and promoting women into positions of leadership, he’ s also working to close the wage gap.
Last year he increased the hourly wage floor to $ 15 an hour, one of the first government agencies in the state to do so. Each person, not just women, who starts in the property appraiser’ s office, will make at least $ 15 an hour. In the fight for $ 15 happening across the country and talk of closing the wage and wealth gap between men and women, Singh is working to make that goal a reality.
“ Some stats show that women make just 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man. Not only is that unfair, it’ s an outrage and immoral,” Singh said.
“ One thing that I can do as a man in this business is to try to fix some of what’ s wrong with how we treat women in business.”
With so many struggling just to make ends meet; working multiple jobs for dual and triple sources of income, Singh has worked to improve the economic conditions of not just women in his office, but everyone.
Working on the frontlines in the fight for equality in government, Singh was also one of the first in the state to institute a policy that offsets the taxable portion of domestic partner health benefits.
Orlando seems like a city that’ s known for its diversity, but the statistics don’ t back that claim up. According to a recent survey by WalletHub, Orlando ranks 88th out of 313 of the largest cities in the country. We’ re improving, yes, but we can always do better.
“ It is interesting to watch so many leaders misuse diversity; treating it like a flavor of the month. It is serious business, and we all need to work on improving our businesses every day through making a commitment to diversity,” Singh said.
With leaders like Singh in position to guarantee that the voices of diversity are heard, our ranking will no doubt get better.
As Orange County continues to grow and new opportunities arise, one of the goals of our leaders should be to work as hard as Singh has to guarantee that minorities and women have a seat and a voice at the table of leadership.
Singh is the first minority ever elected to the office of property appraiser, and as he enters the midway point of his second term, he has goals to increase the opportunities for minorities in his office.
“ There’ s a lot more that I can do as a leader to push the cause of equality for women. I’ m working and having women around me in positions of leadership has been important to my edification and progress.” n
