Being a Woman-Owned
Business in Corporate America
By Jamila Burns
While I built my business it often seemed
that I was always burning the candles at
both ends. I was beyond frustrated as I had
many doors shut in my face. I didn’t know
where to start or where to turn. Fortunately,
my predicament forced me to take a
second look at my resource bank. In a lot
of situations, we often feel like we shouldn’t
ask for help because we know the outcome.
I decided to try again regardless. Those
resources came to my aid and gave me the
boost I needed to make it to my next step.
Giving up was never an option. Whether
your goal is to start a business with a few

employees or many, you have a better
chance getting to the top if you join forces
with others. There is a misconception that
entrepreneurship is a lonely journey. If I’ve
learned anything through my experience
I’ve learned that others believe in you just
as much as you do or more. And if you
have limits, well, there shouldn’t be any!
This is my outlook on life in general. Forget
about the glass ceiling and build your
business without one. The most successful
woman in the world are successful because
they networked successfully with other co-
founders, professional advisors, and their
employees. Food for thought! In the end
it all boils down to hard work, discipline,
and most importantly SACRIFICE! You
can only get back what you’re putting into
your business.
Even with my commitment to be positive,
I’ve experienced discrimination, jealously
and more. I learned which situations
to walk away from so that I could stay
on course. Sometimes you gain your
biggest success by simply saying, “no.”
So, start where you are and use your best
resources and get something done! Use
your million-dollar mind set!
