Ways to Create a Healthy Office

By Marie Elmore

Today many of us spend over half of our weekday working in an office. These workspaces often contain invisible and obvious environmental hazards that degenerates our health. By adding everyday stressors, both physical and mental, to an already sedentary lifestyle, we tend to develop some pretty unhealthy habits that exacerbate the problem. Whether it is a home office or a corporate workspace, there are ways to ensure a healthy space by giving it health makeover.

CLEANER AIR Poor air quality hampers brain power. For many, occupational allergy symptoms are occurring while at work. Many items found in the office such as carpet, cleaning materials, and old dust, are some compounds that aggravate and cause allergic reactions. Increased ventilation and lower levels of air pollutants address this phenomenon and ease the pollutants.
PLANTS & YOUR AIR There are approximately 19 plants that aid in the removal of conventional pollutants in the air and are known to eliminate the harmful elements of benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. The following five plants are among the best: Bamboo Palm,( I keep this one growing in my bedroom and office), Philodendron, Fiscus, English Ivy, and Spider Plants.
LET’ S STAND & DANCE If possible, use a desk with the option to stand when working on a computer or stand and walk around to complete another task. Mini exercise / yoga at your desk for 15 minutes every hour or so is also helpful. Watch your posture while sitting or standing. All will help in reducing pain for the back, neck, hands, and arms. Reducing pain is critical to a healthy body and lifestyle.
IMPROVE CREATIVITY Paint, Paint, Paint …. Environmental psychologist indicated that color affects the ability to be creative. The many shades of green enhance creative thinking. Paint the walls green, add a painting on the wall with green elements. Use green plants! You get the picture.
AROMATHERAPY Essential Oils improve memory, aid brain function and keep you calm. They have also been known to lift spirits throughout the day. Rosemary, Basil, and Cyprus are scented to strengthen memory. Citrus uplifts your mood, and Lavender helps to reduce stress. There is so much more that Aromatherapy aids in many ways.
